Who it is for

Everyone a farming season depends on.

A smallholder farmer is rarely financed alone. A season is financed as a chain: the people who grow, the groups they form, the people who supply and buy, the institutions that finance, cover and guarantee, and the people on the ground. LitFin Intelligence is for every one of them, and the one each of them talks to is Mwikila, its AI Senior Agriculture & Finance Consultant.

For each reader this page keeps two things apart: what works today, and what you gain when the full system is in place. The second is being built. It is not live yet.

What works today

One working service, open to anyone who needs it.

We started by understanding the lender, because that is where financing is unlocked: how a lender thinks, what it asks for and what conditions make it lend. So today LitFin Intelligence does credit appraisal, underwriting and risk analysis for agricultural lending: for an individual loan, a group loan, or a whole portfolio. For a farmer, a group or an agribusiness, the same work prepares a case to the standard a lender expects.

  • It reads the whole file, including pages that arrived as photographs, and says plainly what it could not read
  • Every finding can show what it rests on
  • In English or Swahili, one language at a time
  • A person always makes the decision, and LitFin Intelligence never lends, holds money, insures or guarantees

The people who grow

The season starts with them. Most have been seen by a lender only as a name on a list, never as a producer.

The smallholder farmer

You farm your own plot, alone or as a member of a group, and you want finance that fits your crop calendar.

Today

Bring us your case, on your own or through your group. We prepare it to the standard a lender expects: what you grow, what it costs, what it should earn and when it can be repaid. You take it to the lender you choose, and the lender decides.

When the full system is in place

Being built

Mwikila works beside you in your own language: whether the plan is viable, what a lender will ask, what is missing and what to do next. Your farm is set up as a business, with a production plan and budget built from your plot, records, and a repayment calendar that follows the crop calendar. A village-based agronomist comes to your plot, and you learn whether to stand alone or join a group.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

Bring your case

The person who wants to become a farmer

You have no plot yet, or no first season behind you, and you want a way into agriculture.

Today

If you already have a plan and somewhere to farm, bring it and we will prepare the case for a lender. If you are starting from nothing, there is no service for you yet, and we would rather say so. Tell us what you want to do.

When the full system is in place

Being built

A way in: what you can bring to a chain, a lease or allocation agreement drafted for you and the landholder to sign, a group to join or form, and a first plan a lender can read. You are shown where a chain near you needs what you can offer.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

Tell us what you want to farm

The groups they form

Most farmers are financed through a group, and the groups are not the same thing. An AMCOS, a SACCOS and a VICOBA were each formed for a different purpose, and each meets a lender differently. What is being built for all of them is the same help: organising and structuring the members, identifying the value chain the group belongs to and setting it up, connecting the supplier, the off-taker, the cover and the lender, putting a village-based agronomist on the ground, and training members in agriculture, in financing and in group lending.

AMCOS

An agricultural marketing cooperative society: members who sell their crop together, and often buy their inputs together.

Today

Bring us the society's case for a season: the members, the crop, the inputs and the buyer. We prepare it as a group loan case to the standard a lender expects. The lender decides.

When the full system is in place

Being built

Your members are structured so that a lender sees one borrower and every member beneath it. The value chain you belong to is identified and set up, with the supplier, the off-taker, the cover and the lender connected. A village-based agronomist works with your members on the ground, and members are trained in agriculture, in financing and in group lending.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

Bring your society's case

SACCOS

A savings and credit cooperative society: members who save together and lend to one another. A SACCOS is a lender in its own right.

Today

As a lender, you can use the working service on your own agricultural loans: credit appraisal, underwriting and risk analysis, loan by loan or across the whole portfolio. If the society itself is borrowing for a season, we prepare that case too. Your committee decides.

When the full system is in place

Being built

You lend into chains you can see: each member's place in the chain, the buyer and the cover behind the loan, and the season followed as it runs. Members are trained in financing and in group lending, and the society's own documents are drafted to the standard a larger lender expects when it lends to you.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

Talk to us about your loans

VICOBA

A village community bank: a savings group whose members save and lend among themselves, in their own meetings, by rules they keep themselves.

Today

If your group wants finance for farming, bring us the case and we prepare it to the standard a lender expects. Your savings and your lending stay yours. We hold no money, and we do not replace your meeting or your rules.

When the full system is in place

Being built

Your record of saving becomes evidence a lender can read. The group is structured for the purpose its members choose, and it is connected to a value chain: a supplier, an off-taker, cover and a lender. Members are trained in agriculture, in financing and in group lending, with a village-based agronomist on the ground.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

Bring your group's case

Other producer groups

Farmer associations, outgrower groups, youth and women's groups, and groups not yet formed. There is no fixed kind of group.

Today

A group with a crop, a plan and a buyer in mind can bring its case today, and we prepare it as a group loan case. For a group that is not yet organised, that help is still being built. Tell us where you are.

When the full system is in place

Being built

A group is formed around what its members want: their purpose, needs, goals and capabilities. LitFin Intelligence helps draft the constitution and the agreements to the standard a lender expects. The members take the drafts to an advocate of their own choosing, sign them and upload them. Each document shows as done, in progress or missing. Each is assessed, then confirmed on the ground by a village-based agronomist: these are the real members, and the signing happened.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

Bring your group's case

The people who supply and buy

A season needs inputs before it starts and a market when it ends. A grower's loan rests on both, so both are part of the case.

Input suppliers (agro-dealers)

You sell seed, fertiliser, crop protection, feed or equipment to farmers.

Today

If you want finance for your own business, bring us your case and we prepare it for a lender. Nothing else works for a supplier yet.

When the full system is in place

Being built

Orders with a lender behind them. You join a chain as its supplier, with a supply agreement that states quantities, dates and terms, and records of stock and deliveries that a lender can rely on. Small suppliers can be grouped to meet an order none could fill alone. You are assessed in your own right for that role.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

Talk to us

The off-taker

You commit in advance to take the crop: a processor, a miller, an exporter or an institution that agrees a price, a volume and a date before planting.

Today

Nothing works for an off-taker yet, and we would rather say so. If your supply depends on growers who cannot get finance, talk to us: that is the chain we are building for.

When the full system is in place

Being built

Growers who are financed, verified and coached, and volume you can plan on. Your commitment is written as an off-take agreement with price, volume and date, and it becomes part of what the growers' loan rests on. You are assessed in your own right as an off-taker, and you follow the season: what was planted, what was checked and what is on its way.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

Talk to us about your supply

The buyer

You buy at market, when the crop is ready: a trader, a shop, a kitchen or a group of households. You made no promise before planting.

Today

Nothing works for a buyer yet. Tell us what you buy, how much and how often.

When the full system is in place

Being built

A source you can depend on, with a purchase agreement that states price, volume and date. Small buyers can be grouped into one buyer a grower can plan on, so a village that produces a little, often, meets buyers who buy a little, often.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

Tell us what you buy

Service providers

Transport, storage, mechanisation and veterinary services: the work a chain cannot run without.

Today

If you want finance for your own business, bring us your case. Nothing else works for a service provider yet.

When the full system is in place

Being built

A place in the chain and work you can plan on: a service agreement with the people you serve, and grouping where one provider is too small for the job. You are assessed for the role you play, like every other participant.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

Talk to us

Small agribusinesses

A processor, an aggregator, a farm run as a company, or any small business that earns its living from agriculture.

Today

Bring us your case. We prepare the business plan, the financial model and the application to the standard a lender expects, and you take them to the lender you choose. The lender decides.

When the full system is in place

Being built

The same case, kept current as the season runs, and a place in the chains you buy from or sell into, with every other participant assessed for their role.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

Bring your case

The institutions that finance, cover and guarantee

Licensed institutions with their own rules. LitFin Intelligence does not structure them and does not decide for them. It works to their rules and gives them the full view.

Lenders

Banks and microfinance institutions that lend to agriculture, or want to.

Today

Credit appraisal, underwriting and risk analysis for agricultural lending: for an individual loan, a group loan, or a whole portfolio. Your officers get a file they can question line by line, in English or Swahili, and every finding shows what it rests on. Your officers and your committee decide.

When the full system is in place

Being built

A whole chain you can see, with evidence for every link: the growers, the supplier, the off-taker, the cover and the guarantee. Each participant has been assessed for the role they play, and what they said has been confirmed on the ground. You follow the season as it runs, so a problem is seen while there is still time to act. You still decide whether to lend.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

See what a lender gets today

Leasing providers

You finance equipment and other assets: a tractor, a pump, a cold room, a processing line.

Today

Credit appraisal, underwriting and risk analysis are available now on an agricultural file, and a lease application is one. Nothing built specifically for leasing is live yet. You decide.

When the full system is in place

Being built

You see the chain the asset will work in: who will use it, for whom, and what stands behind the payments. You follow the season, and the use of the asset, as it runs.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

Talk to us

Guarantors

You stand behind part of a loan: as an individual guarantee, loan by loan, or as a portfolio guarantee.

Today

Risk analysis on the files your guarantee stands behind: what each loan rests on, and where the evidence is thin. For a portfolio guarantee, a portfolio review against the criteria you agreed. You decide what to cover.

When the full system is in place

Being built

A whole chain you can see before you commit cover to it, and for as long as the cover runs. You can tell where your guarantee changes the outcome and where the chain would stand without it.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

See what a guarantor gets today

Insurers

You cover the perils that are too large for one season to bear alone: weather, a crop, livestock.

Today

Risk analysis on an agricultural file is available now. Nothing built specifically for an insurer is live yet.

When the full system is in place

Being built

The risk you are asked to cover, with what was confirmed on the ground behind it: what was planted, where and when. Your terms are part of the chain everyone sees, and you follow the season as it runs. You decide what to cover.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

See what an insurer gets today

The people on the ground

A plot cannot be checked from a desk. Someone has to stand on it.

The village-based agronomist

Trained in agriculture and based where the farmers are. You advise farmers and confirm, on the ground, what a chain rests on.

Today

This part is being built. It is not live yet. If you are an agronomist, or about to graduate as one, tell us where you are based.

When the full system is in place

Being built

You never work alone or from memory. Whatever a participant tells you or hands you goes to LitFin Intelligence, which does the analysis and tells you how to move forward. Your job is to compare that analysis with what is actually there on the plot and with what people say, and to bring back what you find. You start a chain's evaluation and you end it, and you carry the judgement of two careers into every field.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

Tell us where you are based

Those who already serve farmers

LitFin Intelligence sits behind what already exists. It is not here to replace the people already doing the work.

Agricultural technology and data providers

You already serve farmers and cooperatives: records, advice, weather, soil, payments or market information.

Today

No connection is live. If what you hold could be evidence in a farmer's case, talk to us now, while this is being designed.

When the full system is in place

Being built

What you already know about a farmer or a cooperative becomes evidence in a chain, with that participant's agreement, and reaches the lender, the guarantor and the insurer who need it. You keep your product and your customers.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

Talk to us

Partners

Technology and delivery partners, development programmes and institutions that want this connecting layer to exist.

Today

We are an early-stage company in Dar es Salaam, and we are looking for the people who will build this with us. Today we work only in Tanzania.

When the full system is in place

Being built

A layer your own work can run on: chains that are visible, participants who have been assessed for their role, and a season that can be followed, in Tanzania first and then across East Africa.

And you see the whole chain you are part of, live, for as long as it runs: each step, each check, and what every status rests on.

Partner with us

For every reader on this page

Everyone on the chain sees the full chain.

This is the promise of the full system, and it is being built. Every participant sees the whole chain they are part of, live, from the start of the season to settlement: who is in it, what each has committed to, each step completed, each check done, each flag raised and settled, and what every status rests on.

Being built

What everyone sees

For every participant and every step: done, missing, checked or flagged, and what that status rests on.

What stays private

A participant's private details, such as financial history. The others see that an item is done or missing, not what is in it.

Who sees the details

The parties whose job is to assess them, such as the lender, who have signed the data and privacy agreements to do so.

Who stays in control

The participant. They can open their details to a chosen party, or to everyone on the chain, if they wish.

Do you see yourself here?

If you do, talk to us, whether what you need works today or is still being built. If we missed you, tell us. Nobody a season depends on should be left out.
